Snow & Wrinkles

On thursday of this week I turned 33 and won another wrinkle and a grey hair. I've been working on a piece of work this week on and off which I'm still to resolve. This week I've seen signs of snow this week, read plenty of reviews of the new Sherlock film which I want to see. Watercolor Challenge

Today I've had a change of heart and picked up the watercolor's which I haven't used in years. It's funny because come lunchtime I'd managed to make more mess eating my spicy chicken wings rather than with the paint. The camera phone photo doesn't do the above justice but you get the idea...

There's some fab works in it by a variety of artists. Collage is something I've not done in ages maybe I should produce some...

For the last seven days I've felt rotten with cold / flu. I'm on the mend and will resume normal service soon. By eck I need a hot soothing drink for my throat. Achtung Baby

Is it really 20 years since U2 released there album Achtung Baby when they were truly on top form. I used to listen to that album loads when I was a lot younger and dafter. I'm still daft so I've been reminded. I'm currently really liking Noel Gallagher's solo album tracks 1,5,6 and 10 are my faves...

Lloyd & Orange

Today I've been drawing Father Christmas been out in the cold on my bike, chuckled to myself at least twice and seen a kestrel up close as it hovered by the roadside, which was great to watch. I also learnt about the romance of Jason Orange and Catherine Tate but learnt in the process he used to date Kathy Lloyd; that's reet the page 3 lass from the 90s. I'm still getting my head around the Lulu saga Mr Orange, but never the less today led me, to pose the question "Whatever happened to Kathy Lloyd ?".... I've also been listening to the new Noel Gallagher album whilst thinking about thinking...

Well early this morning I've read some of the new Varoom which has had a makeover personally I liked how it was before. I cannot see me retaining copies of it for long in it's new format.I'm still gonna be reading it because the content is "On the Money". I love the content plain and simple. As ever I enjoyed reading the Paul Davis column; I hope one day I cross paths with that man...

Pause / Play

Here are some photos from my mate dan of Devote associates taken at the Pause / Play show at the Mash Gallery at St Helens organized by Cultivate Creative. At least one person looked at my work and admired the framing by my mate Smiley Dave. My piece is based on a Seal track, don't chuckle when I hit secondary school in 91 he was cool. On hearing the Seal track from one of his newer albums it reminded me of a black and white photo; which I'd ripped out of a magazine and have retained for over ten years on a pin board. The image is one of my faves and conjures up romance in NYC. I've been twice and still haven't found it....

Pause / Play

Launching tonight is the exhibition Pause / Play at Mash Gallery, 11 Haydock Street, St Helens organized by those nice folk at the design studio Cultivate Creative. One Direction

I did read like thousands of overs about the chap from One Direction who wore pink shorts. The first man from Doncaster to wear pink shorts I may add. I do believe they were the same shade pink as a can of Alaskan Pink Salmon. Maybe in another life I'll comeback with the skill set to sing reet good and have lots of ladies swoon over me, Imagine eh...

Better View

I've recently been reading "A Bigger Message Conversations with David Hockney" by Martin Gayford. It's been a good read so far learning about Hockers and his works on a iphone and how he has been illuminating landscapes of Yorkshire. Meanwhile I've drawn the above based on a chat about a wandering eye...

The above is from a page in my sketchbook. It's a rough of a character drawn up with a inky, scratchy pen. I have however on my travels today to resolve my lunch, picked up on dvd all 21 Tintin animated adventures remastered in HD out today, ahead of the motion picture release which Speilberg has completed. The old animated adventures are great; but the books are still King. The jury will be out on that forth coming Tintin movie...

In the Rain

This weekend I've been over to Manchester catching up with some old mates. Along the way I ate some great food and had a few beers. BIO 10

I was recently invited to design a badge for the graphic art and fashion boutique by those nice folk of studio Fl@33. I look forward to hearing what people think about my new badge design and indeed maybe seeing folk wearing one. It really is a cool collection of badges by some great artists including one of my faves Lawrence Zeegen, just don't tell him.

Rainy Bike Rides

Well over the last few days I've completed a few short bike rides and each time I've been caught up in the rain and managed to spot many foxes. Alongside much brainstorming in my sketchbooks; discovering the blog of the great Brian Grimwood has been a recent online treat. Readers if you don't know the work of Brian get searching on those search engines he's done much for the world of illustration.

Died On Me

Well over the last few days I've broke the fridge, my disk drive has died, my bike light died on me. They say it comes in 3's don't they. Fingerscrossed that is my three things to go wrong. On the plus side it doesn't seem windy and at least its not raining...

Fake Beard

Cycling earlier in the rain I noticed this chap who had this really black beard and it really looked odd with his complexion and perhaps the age of his skin being a chap in his 50s. It looked fake; perhaps he had dyed it, who knows. I did early doors clock a fox on the brow of a field plus a rat ran out at me and almost went under the front wheel, that's twice that has happened to me in about a month.

In A Hat

Here you go, a dapper hound in a hat, just what I want on order. At the time of writing I'm gonna be on the search for food real soon; throw in a brew and I'll be made up...

I was thinking the other day, how I feel too old to use the term "Lol" either in conversation or in a txt message. I just feel it's dialogue folk use younger than me. I'm glad it looks like today the wind has subsided. Those gusts of wind were certainly causing havoc in a lot of places.

Monday, 12 September 2011

Silly Billy

A little earlier I popped to the library and I overheard a yummy mummy utter "Silly Billy" to her kid. I've not heard that term of phrase in ages. I used to love it when my mum took me as a kid to the library to lend Tintin and Asterix adventures, good times. I also had some good times hanging out in a library from 1998 to 2001; but I'll save that for my biography...

It's Reet Windy

Well I went out cycling yesterday and it was a little windy then; but today it's now gale force winds slowing folk up. I've been down the post office today and the only thing keeping the chap next to me from his wig blowing off, was his baseball cap.. As ever we continue...

Top Ten

Well today I've been roughing out ideas in a sketchbook for possible artworks and generally brainstorming. I have read today that Doncaster in a recent survey went top ten in the country for purchasing books online with a certain retailer. Who'd have thought Donny would go top ten for having the most readers. Speaking of which; I finished my copy of the Bear Grylls biography yesterday. Next up I'm reading "Vox" the book Clinton was apparently bought by Monica...

Windy Ride

This morning I was out riding at a daft hour and it was real windy I also employed two lights to illuminate my way. Thank goodness though I missed the rain for once when the wind did drop. Although I feel the waterproofs will be getting used massively from this point onwards through the Autumn / Winter.

Rumour Has It

I've heard a whisper that once again my tee that I did with super superficial may have been seen on tv but this has not been confirmed yet. Meanwhile I've had a bike light drama on one of my early morning bike rides. It really is dark in a morning once more at 4.45am...

Mud, Sweat And Tears

I've been reading the Bear Grylls biography and it makes interesting reading about the SAS selection process he went through. Over the years I've read books about the cycling legends that tackle the Tour De France, the men who walk 100 miles in one go and books about men that row the English channel in a bath tub. I'm interested by those that push themselves to these extremes not sure what that says about me; answers on a postcard please.

Smiley Face

Here you go readers; I got the idea for this the other day after doing some serious playing around in my sketchbook... It makes for a rather cheeky smiley face, it's the cheeky chap in me that drove me to draw this. Reet I need a brew, possibly a cold shower...

Images 35

Well I've just unwrapped and had a quick flick through the new Images 35 book, I have my "Dining Out" image in there. But flicking through it there's some great work in there by Andy Smith and Simon Spilsbury, Andy Potts and other great illustrators. I only wish I'd been able to go to the private view evening last week.

Snippet Of Romance

The other night I watched "To Hull And Back" a classic Only Fools and Horses episode; I'd not seen it in years but it still made me chuckle and I'd not seen an episode with Del Boy in a long while so it felt fun. Yesterday I went for a wander around York and browsed some of the second hand bookshops. I did get myself a another book on cycling to digest; but before I read that one I'm gonna digest "Blood Knots" by Luke Jennings a book on fishing, friendship and growing up it's all nostalgia; throw in snippets of romance it will be great reading with a brew or two. It even got shortlisted for a prize in 2010 so it must be good..

Tuesday, 23 August 2011

Yesterday I got back from the Lake District after some camping and hiking with some mates, although one of them is a hybrid I'm sure he's part Sherpa part mountain goat;this is a view we digested along the way on our walk the other day. This photo was snapped on my camera phone which I rarely use. Along the way I won some blisters, due to my new boots but as ever we continue...

From Donny With Love

Well readers I've been up early and finished reading Tracey Emin "My Life In A Column" which was a good read. I've also drawn the above for the cat lovers of this world, personally I'm a dog lover. This little kitty was drawn partly to the sound of From Russia With Love sang by Matt Monro. Personally I think Mr Monro's finest track features at the start of The Italian Job.

Wednesday, 17 August 2011

There is a possible 'Survival Weekend' on the horizon for me, I'll say "Survival Weekend" because to remark I'm going camping just sounds like I'll be walking round Donny with a silk crevat on and that's standard for me with a flat cap. What I want to know, do ladies where Lederhosen while hiking round the Lakes while looking for gents to help them with there rucksacks. Trust me I'll be taking a steel flask for a brew...

An Education

Well today I had to pop into town [ Doncaster ] and this gent overheard a couple of twenty something ladies talking shop. "If it's over 7 or 8 inches, I'm not playing cos I'm not designed that way". Now having overheard this, the penny only dropped moments later, because I was deep in my own thought process. But you learn something everyday don't you; and before I get letters, texts and emails, 'about average'....... we continue...

Tough Ride

Over the last few days I've been mostly doodling, thinking and reading. I even managed a bike ride where the bolt holding my seat to the seat post snapped; so I had to ride home with no seat stood up. Readers that hurts the legs, when you are miles from home. I've now sorted that problem so the cycling will continue. Got to admit yesterday afternoon it was great weather wise, but I was told we are to expect another bad Winter.

Thursday, 11 August 2011

Here you go; the above is produced after reading Flashman, drinking too much tea and watching too many episodes of Byker Grove as a kid with Geoff in them or whatever his name was. Reet kettle on pronto...

Here you go I saw this great black and white photo of a model named Bev who amazingly is 43. I thought this was a great pose and I've worked up the above. I just liked the shape and angles. Looking at the prospects of today rain is on the agenda. Reet I need a brew and then we continue.

Tuesday, 9 August 2011

Today I got asked to supply a photo of myself so it could be blown up to A1 proportions to be displayed at a college with other faces and there biographies to inspire young creatives. By eck me an inspiration. But if this working class nugget can do some good everyone can..

At the moment I'm trying to think of things to make me smile. Dave your holiday is over mate; "You have your work cut out, get it sorted Sir..." Get it sorted then I'll take you for a brew and we can compare notes, like my hourly rate and yours and how you earnt yours sorting the chaos.
